The Eastern Townships School Board recognizes that one to one computing, using laptops, supported in a wireless environment and properly implemented, can improve the performance of students. The intent of this project is twofold. It focuses on Learning and Teaching. The first primary objective is to enhance our students’ achievements such that improvements in literacy; numeracy; reduction in the repeating of grades; reduction in the dropout rates of Eastern Townships School Board students are attained by June 30, 2007. The second primary objective is to empower our teaching personnel by providing a technological tool for integration into the curriculum and teaching practices.

In September 2003, Peace River North (SD 60), implemented the Wireless Writing Program (WWP), providing iBooks on a 1:1 basis to all grades 6 and 7 students. Implementation involved 1150 students, and 37 teachers in 17 schools, and followed a successful 18-month pilot project. The Wireless Writing Program (WWP) is designed to improve student achievement, motivation, and learning skills, through the integration of technology with writing instruction. The BC Performance Standards for Writing are an integral part of the program.

The Maine Learning Technology Initiative is the first statewide learning with laptop initiative. It started as the idea of former Governor Angus King, at a time when the state had a 50 million dollar surplus. Governor King asked Maine resident Seymour Papert if it wouldn’t be fantastic to increase the student to computer ratio to 3 to 1. Seymour said not to bother; it was only at 1-to-1 that there really was an impact.
